Joan Almekinders (1969)

Joan Almekinders graduated in 1994 with a honourable mention at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University in Delft, Holland. He collaborated as a freelance architect with several offices in the Netherlands and the U.S.A. From June 1995 untill April 2000 he worked at NOX Architekten at which the Freshwater pavilion at the island Neeltje Jans and the V2_lab in Rotterdam where two of his major projects. From April 2000 he was as architect at the office of Hoogstad architecten involved in several projects such as the masterplan for the Technical University Twente and the preliminary design for the underground central railway station in Delft. Since June 2002 he worked as an architect at NIO architecten. He has joined the partnership of this office in January 2004 with the founder, Maurice Nio. Together they direct an office of about 8 people, all architects, working on a wide range of projects such as commercial retail and leisure, infrastructural works, housing and cultural buildings. Next to this practice he has been teaching since 1994 at the IAH Larenstein, Velp and from 2001 till 2004 at the European Masters for Landscape Architects, Velp-Wageningen. He has lectured in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Estonia and the United States.
